Larry Hogan Is Wrong To Call For Slashing Covid Aid

Hogan Says President Biden’s Aid Package Needs to “Give Something Up”

MARYLAND Thursday, February 18th, Maryland Democratic Party Chair Yvette Lewis released the following statement after Governor Larry Hogan criticized President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, and called for Democrats to slash the critical COVID-19 aid package:

“Millions of Americans are out of work, and countless Marylanders are struggling to put food on their tables. The American people need a bold, broad COVID-19 relief package, and they need it as soon as possible. President Biden’s America Rescue Plan is just that — and will deliver desperately needed aid to communities across our state.

“Governor’s Hogan’s calls to slash the bill and for Democrats to “give something up,” would be harmful to our state, our small businesses, our economy, and our communities. I would ask Governor Hogan, just what part do you suggest giving up? The direct relief checks to Americans; unemployment benefits to those who’ve lost their job; support for small businesses; or funding for vaccines, testing, and schools? We need to pass the American Rescue Plan, and we simply cannot afford to provide insufficient aid in the name of compromise.

“Not only are Hogan’s calls for concessions bad policy, but they’re simply out of touch.  Recent polling found that 72% of Americans support President Biden’s relief plan, including 69% of independents and a majority of Republicans. This is not a Red or Blue issue, 63% of small business owners support President Biden’s American Rescue plan, including 46% of Republican small business owners.

“If Governor Hogan truly wanted to help Marylanders during this crisis he would end the faux outrage, and wholeheartedly support this overwhelmingly supported plan.”
