Maryland Democratic Party Reacts to May’s Strong Jobs Report

Jun 04, 2021

In response to today’s jobs report, which saw the U.S. economy add 559,000 in May, Maryland Democratic Party Chair Yvette Lewis released the following statement:

“Today’s strong jobs report clearly demonstrates that President Biden’s policies are working and our economy is roaring back to life. But while this report is encouraging, we cannot let up until every Marylander who wants a job has one. We need to pass President Biden’s American Families Plan and American Jobs Plan now.

“That’s why we’re deeply disappointed that Governor Larry Hogan continues to oppose the very policies that are helping Maryland recover from the pandemic. Whether it’s his opposition to the American Rescue Plan and the desperately needed relief checks it provided, or his opposition to a comprehensive infrastructure plan that will combat climate change and repair Maryland’s roads and bridges, Larry Hogan continues to put his political ambitions ahead of Maryland families. He demonstrated that again just this week with his heartless decision to cut expanded unemployment benefits for Marylanders struggling to find work.

“Under Larry Hogan’s leadership, Maryland has one of the slowest pandemic recoveries in the nation. Now, he’s pulling the rug out from under Marylanders as they try to climb out of the pandemic and support their families. How much more should Maryland suffer while Larry Hogan uses us to score political points with Republican primary voters?”
