Hogan Administration To Blame for Trump Health Care Hikes in Maryland

Oct 25, 2017

Annapolis, Md. – After weeks of failing to prevent health insurance premium hikes, Governor Larry Hogan’s administration today signed off on steep rate increases for Marylanders.

Today’s premium hikes are the direct result of Republicans’ efforts to sabotage the Affordable Care Act, including the Trump Administration’s refusal to continue making cost sharing reduction payments.  Prior acts of sabotage have been applauded by the Hogan-appointed Chair of the Maryland Health Care Commission, Robert Moffitt.

Not only are members of the Hogan administration celebrating ACA sabotage, last week, Hogan refused to sign a bipartisan letter to congressional leaders that urged a bipartisan fix to avoid premium hikes on consumers.

Thanks to Republicans like Hogan’s inaction and refusal to lead on this issue, health insurance premiums for Marylanders will go up by as much as 76% for 2018 and taxpayers will continue to foot the bill for this market instability.

“Governor Hogan has refused to speak out against Republican sabotage of health care and he has surrounded himself with people who applaud the sabotage efforts. Now his Administration is asking Marylanders to foot the bill,” said Maryland Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Matthews. “Governor Hogan has not only failed to provide Marylanders with a plan to lower their health insurance premiums, it is clear that he is a part of the problem.”
