Maryland Democratic Party Requests Investigation into Hogan’s Apparent Campaign Finance Violations

For Immediate Release 6/24/19

Annapolis, MD— On Monday the Maryland Democratic Party filed a formal complaint with the State Board of Elections over apparent campaign finance violations revealed in a recent Baltimore Sun op-ed. The op-ed written by Howard and Baltimore County State Senator Clarence Lam (D-12) details a number of Hogan donors who donated far beyond the maximum allowable limits within a four year period. Several of the donors in apparent violation are current and former UMMS Board Members.

“We started looking into the governor’s donor history and found there were nearly 100 individuals and entities that had donated above the campaign finance limits. Combined there are at least $200,000 in excessive donations that Hogan has received in apparent violation of Maryland’s campaign finance laws,” Maryland Democratic Party Executive Director Ben Smith said.

Publicly available campaign finance reports show that there is a pattern of individuals and businesses tied to high dollar donors bundling sums for Hogan well above the legal limits. Records indicate that Hogan’s campaign has not returned to overpayments over the four-year period.
