Maryland Democratic Leaders Take Steps to Close $3 Billion Gap in Public School Funding

Jan 30, 2018

Annapolis, MD— Today, Maryland Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Matthews issued the following statement after Democratic leaders in the Maryland State House introduced an amendment to the Maryland Constitution to help close a $3 billion gap in public school funding:

“Maryland’s public school were the best in the country for five straight years, but they have now dropped in national rankings every year Larry Hogan has been governor.  While Hogan is focused on bringing Betsy DeVos’ war on public schools to Maryland, Democratic leaders in the State House are working with educators, experts, advocates and civil rights groups to ensure that Maryland keeps its promise to provide every child with a world-class education regardless of their zip code, race or family income.

“The recommendations presented by the Kirwan Commission will give Maryland a once-in-a-generation opportunity to fix our outdated funding formula, and this constitutional amendment will ensure that revenue raised from casino gaming goes to the Education Trust Fund to help the state meet its obligations to students.

“Democrats in the State House have taken a big first step toward meeting Maryland’s new commitment to students.  Governor Hogan must follow their lead.”
