The Maryland Democratic Party Recognizes the 31st Anniversary of the ADA

Jul 26, 2021

Maryland Democratic Party Chair Yvette Lewis released the following statement commemorating the 31st anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act:

“Thirty-one years ago today, Democrats and Republicans came together to pass one of the most significant pieces of civil rights legislation in our nation’s history — the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA reaffirmed the fundamental truth that every American deserves to be treated with dignity, and have equal protection under the law.

“For the nearly 60 million Americans living with disabilities, the ADA has delivered on the promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. But, there’s still work to be done.

“As the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted continuing issues with inaccessibility, too many people with disabilities still face barriers to employment, health care, education, and other fundamental rights. We must use this anniversary to continue making our society more fair and accessible for every American.”
