New Enrollment Period Expands Health Care Access During the COVID-19 Pandemic

MARYLAND — Yesterday, Monday, February 15th, President Joe Biden opened HealthCare.gov for a special health insurance enrollment period through May 15th, 2021. “Health care is a right, not a privilege,” President Biden said in a statement announcing the new enrollment period — that’s why he’s ensuring Americans now have the opportunity to get covered under an affordable, accessible, health care plan.

“As the global pandemic continues to ravage our country, there could be nothing more important than ensuring that all Americans have access to quality, affordable health care,” said Maryland Democratic Party Chair Yvette Lewis. “President Biden has made it clear that health care is a fundamental human right, and by opening this special enrollment period he shows his continued commitment to this belief. This commitment goes hand in hand with his American Rescue Plan, which will both take on the COVID-19 pandemic, and make big steps to lower health costs and expand access to care for all Americans, including those who have lost their jobs. I would encourage any American without health insurance to sign up for a plan at HealthCare.gov.”

This open enrollment period is made possible by the Affordable Care Act, which was championed by then-Vice President Biden — it provided over 20 million Americans with health insurance, and protected 100 million Americans with pre-existing conditions. As president, Biden will continue to make healthcare more affordable, and accessible. Any American who needs health insurance should sign up at HealthCare.gov
