Maryland Democratic Party Lauds Passing of Police Reform

Apr 07, 2021

Maryland – Wednesday, April 7th, Maryland Democratic Party Chair Yvette Lewis released the following statement after Democrats in the Maryland General Assembly passed comprehensive police reform legislation:

“The police reform legislation passed by the Maryland General Assembly today is a massive step towards improving the safety of our communities, ensuring racial justice and equity, and restoring trust in our law enforcement.

“The comprehensive reforms will increase the transparency and accountability of law enforcement across the state. The five bills that passed included key provisions that would curb the improper use of force, require body cameras on all police officers, allow misconduct allegations to be publicly accessible, and ensure that warrants aren’t executed in a reckless manner.

“I want to thank Democrats in the General Assembly — especially Speaker Adrienne Jones and Senate President Bill Ferguson — for championing these five vitally important bills. I urge Governor Hogan to sign them into law, and improve the lives and safety of countless Marylanders.”
