5 Things to Look Out For During Governor Hogan’s State of the State

Annapolis, Md. - Ahead of Governor Hogan’s State of the State today, here are five important things to look out for:

1. Trump: Governor Hogan has been been dancing around the Trump elephant in the room for some time. But now that the President’s harmful agenda is already being felt in Maryland, the Governor can’t ignore Trump much longer.

Over the weekend, Trump’s controversial travel ban - which Hogan refused to denounce - led to the detention of a 5-year-old boy, a Maryland resident and citizen, at Dulles International Airport. Hogan was no where to be seen. And local organizations are also reporting that the travel ban is “tearing [Maryland] families apart.”

And just yesterday, Hogan rejected a legislative attempt to protect Maryland from Trump’s harmful agenda.

So all of this raises a larger point: will Hogan defend Maryland from Trump’s harmful agenda?

2. Health care scare: Trump and Washington Republicans are pushing forward with plans to repeal the Affordable Care Act - with no replacement.

With the health care of 400,000 Marylanders in jeopardy and a projected negative fiscal impact of $2.2 billion in Maryland, the focus now turns to whether Hogan plans to protect Maryland.

3. Governor “My way or the highway”: Marylanders want their leaders to work together to get things done. Apparently Governor Hogan doesn’t share those views.

Take for example the renewable energy standard that’s buzzing this week. Not only did he veto the measure that is projected to boost the local economy and lead to the creation of thousands of Maryland jobs, but he is leaning in hard to kill the effort outright.

So look to see if Maryland will see more of Governor “My way or the highway” Hogan this session.

4. Cutting out of class: We’ve heard plenty from Governor Hogan on improving private schools in Maryland. But after three years, Hogan has yet to plan any real solutions when it comes to improving public schools.

Listen to see if the Governor plans to continue taking taxpayer dollars away from public schools in order to push his own privatization agenda.

** And guess who shares Hogan’s private school agenda: Donald Trump and his education nominee, Betsy DeVos.

5.  Hogan’s slogans, not solutions: Here’s a fun game. Let’s count the number of times Hogan resorts to slogans during his speech, instead of offering up real solutions. We’ll be tallying up here...
