LETTER TO THE EDITOR TIPS

Keys to Getting Your Letters Published

Responsive – In reaction to news stories and events and/or,

Corrective – Setting the record straight

New – Information and/or Perspective

Short – Just one main point, maybe two – 1 to 4 paragraphs, 200 words at the most

Simple – Easy to grasp, commonly used language

Fact Filled & Personal - Your opinion, experiences and rhetoric wrapped around hard facts. If you have a quick story that illustrates the point, use it.

Pithy - Give it some personality, or irony or attitude or humor or all of the above

Always write your name, address and every day and night phone number to be sure the editors can reach you and verify that you are who you say you are. They won’t print the letter without it.

PICK ONE OR MORE NEWSPAPERS THAT YOU NORMALLY READ and WRITE what YOU THINK, KNOW and BELIEVE.
