About

Marilynn M. Bland, a resident of Clinton, Maryland, is serving her first term as the Ninth District's representative to the County Council of Prince George's County. Marilynn was the Legislative Aide to the late Honorable Councilman Isaac J. Gourdine of District 8.

Marilynn received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1983. At this time, she became a lifetime member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nurses. Additionally, she served her country as a Commissioned Officer with the United Stated Air Force (Nurse Corps), from 1983 to 1986. She has also been employed as a Staff Nurse at Greater South East Community Hospital (1994-1995), Southern Maryland Hospital Center (1991-1992), and Providence Hospital (1990).

With a high dedication and strong commitment to education, Marilynn was elected to the Prince George's County Board of Education in 1996 and re-elected in 2000. She served until 2002. During this time, she served on the Superintendent's Evaluation Committee, the Legislative Committee, Policy Review Committee, the Budget and Administration Oversight Committee, the Capital Improvement Program Oversight Committee, the Superintendent's Review and Search Committee, the MSPAP Ad Hoc Subcommittee, the Equity Committee, the Instruction Committee (Title IX Occupational Skills), Chair of the Pupil Services Committee, and the Budget & Administration (Audit, Transfer Tax Rate Task Force) Committee. Marilynn also served on two of the Board Audit Implementation Committees, which were established in response to the MGT of America performance audit of the school system. She also served as Vice Chair of the board. Marilynn has done so much over the years to enhance the quality of education for all students in the Prince George's County Public School District. Consequently, she spearheaded the effort to ensure that all students were provided with his/her own textbook in all of the core disciplines. Having a deep sense of appreciation and concern for education, Marilynn has merited acclaim in William J. Bennett's National Bestseller "The Educated Child".

Marilynn's civic and community involvement is far-reaching. She volunteered her services with the Oxon Hill Boys & Girls Club in 1995, Indian Queen Elementary School PTA (Vice President) in 1995-1996, Waldon Woods Elementary School Parent Volunteer in 1991-1994, Sunday School Teacher at Fort Meade AFB Chapel, and served with the Ebenezer AME Education Ministry. Throughout her daily activities, she has positive collaborative interaction with youth and her constituencies. Moreover, it is natural and routine for Marilynn to communicate, infusing tremendous motivation and constant encouragement.

Bio

Marilynn is a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Association For Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) and the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

Marilynn has two children: Justin and Tonya. They are students in the Science and Technology Program at Oxon Hill High School, Oxon Hill, Maryland. As a family, they attend Mount Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton, Maryland.
